My recollection from brief listening in a showroom long ago was similar to EdA's. I recall them as being muffled, thick, and ill-defined. Someone threw a thick blanket over everything. It took almost no time at all to hear they weren't very good.

How can a company make good turntables and cartridges and produce lousy speakers? Easy - different design teams, different design skills, different objectives. As far as I could tell at the time, the focus for the Empire speakers was on the marketing, not the product itself, as evidenced by the advertisement one of the other folks in this thread posted.
