RE: So, the crackly noises are now gone ?

Thanks for the extra information. It doesn't seem to make much difference by fiddling with those, but it's worth me bearing them in mind.

To be honest, as it's not got any better (though I managed to get it to come out of 1 speaker last night for about 20 minutes), I think my only option is to find a local electrician that's willing to look at it - most retail shops have said they wouldn't attempt to repair an item of this age.
