The old NAD 3020 integrated had no op amps. My later NAD C350 with IC's kills it.
The point here is not what you use, so much as how well you use it. Early op amps didn't have enough gain-bandwidth product and got into slew rate issues. Later designs eliminate that issue; but the story that op-amps sound bad persists.
