RE: Mystery Jensens

All of these components were available as a kit, the KT-33, for $80 in 1961 (Allied). They were also used in a Jensen product, the CN-100, as mentioned in an earlier post. The CN-100 had an internal volume of about 5.7cf. The enclosures you are looking at look like they are around 2.5 cf, so the LF performance will be a little off (not as extended). Not SOTA, but really good vintage, if that is what you are looking for. These will probably run about 93 db/w/m and have excellent bass into the mid 30's in the right box.

The Flexair woofers were the Jensens approach to a compact speaker with extended bass. They incorporated high compliance surrounds (treated cloth accordian) and a relatively generous Xmax. They predated T/S analysis by a decade, but have T/S parameters well suited to use in relatively small BR enclosures.

The P8-UM midrange (used from 600-4000 Hz) is not the last word in resolution by todays standards, but does provide a warm, natural voice reproduction.

The RP-103A horn tweeters have phenolic diaphrams and provide a fast, detailed sound with minimal horn coloration. However, they only extend to around 13KHz, so there will be a lack of 'air'. This can be easily resolved by adding a 'supertweeter'.

If these were placed in a 4-5 cf BR, with good wire and rebuilt (or new) crossovers (at the same points as the original, with film/oil caps and air-core coils) and with a small horn supertweeter, they would be pretty awesome. The stock crossover may have oil caps (a good thing).

Good luck,

Bob
