I have no experience with the vintage, high-end Sony speakers. But, for non-audiophiles I do recommend the Sony bookshelf speakers for consideration. They aren't great, but in my opinion they sound far better than anything else in their price range at the big-box stores. I have a little pair with 5.25" woofers in the bedroom and like them enough to not bother upgrading. Sony engineered some major psycho-acoustics into them 'cause they sound bigger than they are. Back in the late 80's my brother got a set of the 3-ways with the 8" woofer--yes, my KEF mini-monitors sounded better, but those Sonys cost like 1/3 what the KEFs did.
