IIRC The story is that Philips wanted to guarantee the success of the new CD format, so they over-designed this drive to make sure that it would work regardless of the application. So it's extremely good at getting all the information off of a CD! It's all metal, and very robust/reliable. They put it in their top, premium players. I found that it makes a superior transport, unlike the CD-ROM drives found today in so many CD Players.
