Yes, I use the same pad settings. BUT...that's because my room is pretty symmetrical. The NS1000's are equal distance from the side walls, and both walls have bookcases on them.
IF I had an assymetrical setup, I'd definately play with the controls.
I agree that the imaging is not SOTA for 2007. They really weren't designed for that, and most vintage speakers don't image the way modern ones do. These were designed for the recording studio....
I also agree they sound like ESL. I own Magnepan MG1.5's, and the NS1000's share many of the same sonic attributes.
I have run them with SS amps of 200 watts (Yamaha M70), and 185 watts (McCormack DNA-1), but I like them best with my CJ Premier 11A tube amp (70 watts). I NEVER lack for volume.
As far as harsh..... Last month I was listening to Michael Jackson's Thriller on Vinyl, and I had it REALLY loud. It did actually sound a bit harsh - until I turned it down......
