I've been that route with all the gauges, etc. It does make a difference, and so does the resistive and capacitive loading.

As far as cartridges deteriorating, it would be mainly in the stylus suspension, if they used elastomers that aged. (most do)

I just fixed an ancient perpetuum-Ebner TT for a friend and used a 30 year old Shure M75 body with a new stylus. Works very well.
