I wouldn't expect a preamp/power amp mismatch would have that siginificant an effect. Almost sounds like an out of phase situation. Does the Hafler have a bridging switch?

The easiest way to check for channel phase is to hook a speaker across the + terminals and feed the amp the same source to both channels (as with a Y connector). If the channels are in phase, there will be little or no output from the speaker. Or you can just reconnect everything and try reversing the phase in one channel.
