First things first.....

You'll need to get some contact cleaner for all the switches and controls. Many folks here use DeOxit for this purpose but it may not be available where you are. Some Radio Shacks still stock contact cleaner in a can but many have been cutting back on electronic parts for the hobbyist of late.

All your descriptions seem to point in the direct of dirty contacts.

As for the speaker wiring, your arrangement should be fine for a single set of speakers.
