I've got three sets of speakers in my living room. When I forget which one is on, sometimes I guess wrong by ear. The best for me is to just doze, half awake and half asleep, and forget which one is on. Everything sounds real then, like I'm in the hall with the musicians. But doing the quick A-B testing (even unblinded) is the only way for me to figure out anything about which speakers are decent and which are preposterous, although I tend to like them all. But of the three out there now, I prefer A to B, B to C, and C to A. A is most balanced, B has the most bass and the hottest highs, and C has the most up-front sound and the deepest bass, I think.
