Re: Subjective versus objective listening and the warmth of Marantz.

Just for a bit 'O pedantic, OT clarity vis "habituation" and "extinction":

"Habituation" occurs when one ceases to take note of a stimulus after repeated exposure. A loud noise may initially cause one to orient and startle, but with repeated exposure one "habituates" to the stimulus, no longer experiences a startle, and no longer orients to or otherwise takes note of the sound. The odor example is actually a good example of habituation.

"Extinction" has two meanings, depending upon the level of learning involved. One level is vis classical conditioning - think Pavlov's dogs - which entails the training of an involuntary response. A meat paste presented to a dog results in salivation with no learning. Pavlov paired a the sound of a bell with the presentation of a meat paste - after a few trials, the bell alone elicited salivation. Extinction occurred when the bell was rung repeatedly in the absence of paste - after repeated trials, salivation reduced and eventually "extinguished."

The second sense of extinction pertains to operant learning, which pertains to voluntary behaviors that are acquired and strengthened in response to reinforcement. Think Skinner. A rat acquires the response of pressing a bar when that behavior results in the delivery of a food reward. Then the reward (reinforcer) stops. The "strength" of the rat's responding - the frequency of responding - drops over time, and eventually "extinguishes." The rate at which that occurs depends in large measure upon the "schedule" on which the reinforcer was originally delivered.
