Sansui 210 won't tune

Rescued one of these old girls from the local recycler this morning. Looks great, sounds good on FM. The problem is around the tuner that won't tune. The string mechanism seems to be in place. It just won't budge the tuning indicater no matter how long you turn the tuning dial. Top off, I can push the string while dialing and get it to work.
Any thoughts other than operating w/0 the cabinet?
