McIntosh MA230 Question

I have read alot about this receiver, and it seems most people have a problem with the preamp stage.
Does anyone have any experience modifying it to only use the amp section with an external pre-amp? I am wondering how hard this would be to do.
I have a chance to pick this up cheap, and it would be my first tube amp, so let me know what you think... is it worthwhile or a substandard McIntosh product (compared to the rest).
