The external box was more of a crossover adjustment box than an equalizer ala Bose. The Bose equalizer actually boosted the highs and lows by over 10 dB to make up for the natural rolloffs of the drivers it used, the KLH box adjusted the levels of 4 broad bands by a few dB up or down similar to a midrange or tweeter control. Also, it was passive, between the amplifier and speaker, rather than before the speaker as the Bose is.
