I don't have up-close and personal photos of a 500C VC, but I do just happen to have a couple of photos of the 400's VC, which I'll post and hope they're helpful. I was showing someone how to clean the pots, so you'll see in each photo the red plastic nozzle from a can of DeOxit poked into each pot :-)

I don't recall fo' sho' but I imagine there's a "loudness" tap on the volume control pots. Check the loudness switch for "proper operation" (i.e., clean it!, if you haven't)

It's also quite possible that one section of your stereo volume pot is bad, too.
