Marantz Model 9 Differences

I am currently looking for a Model Nine to pair up with my Model 9. In speaking with someone, he mentioned that some Model 9's have two stages and other 9's have 3 stages. Of course, I would like to match mine as closely as possible. Is this true. How do I tell how many stages mine has? Do the serial numbers provide the information, in that after a certain number all 9's consist of a certain number of stages and are more closely matched? Is anyone aware of other differences?
