This is turning into a very enlightening thread. New tubes can certainly be the source of your harsh ssssssses. Newer Eastern Euro 6DJ8s and 12AX7s and 12AU7s can sound very harsh, compared to older, vintage UK, Western Europe, or even USA made tubes.
Did you notice the harshness when you added the new CD player or new cables ? Let us not forget, that every electronic part requires "break-in time, including cables and tubes and caps, etc.
Keep us posted of your findings. It will interest all of us, what caused the distress...
