Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

Collectible versus premium parts for mac mc240s and the like.

There have been numerous discussions over the years about mac and marantz gear and the like and the sonic value of upgrades versus the so called diminished classic value when upgraded. If it was said once it was said a million times. If you dont alter the chasis or transformers physically such as putting holes in them or making existing holes larger, you wont hurt a thing as long as you leave the option open so you can put it back to original if a buyer wants that.
It really is the orientials that wanted them original from day one in the early 80s when the vintage market took off and they were the main buyers giving the mac, marantz, and West elec amps the high price boost that eventully became the norm all over the world.
Fast forward 20 plus years later and all of a sudden you have reissues of classic amps and now the 50 year old amps now need major attention..Most macs have BAD filter caps and couplers and what fools a lot of people on the mac is they are a mostly class B amp and when you check ripple content at idle it appears to show little or no ripple and I have made this mistake also until I realized you have to crank the amp to about 1/2 to 3/4 power and then you will see the power supply collapse at low frequencies because of high ESR.
