If your tung oil is "varnishy", it's not tung oil, but something with tung oil as an ingredient.

True tung oil has no gloss. It's satin to the point of being matte. Great stuff. The sheen you get is from rubbing (polishing) the wood, not from an exterior coating.

I believe Fromby's "tung oil" is really a lacquer of some kind with tung oil added.

Don't neglect trying BLO (boiled linseed oil), and for maintenance I like Howard's Feed-N-Wax (beeswax and orange oil).

I used some Howard's Restor-A-Finish yesterday on some badly water-damaged JBL 99s, and it really did a nice job on restoring the color.
