"This is what I get for listening to a subjectivist tube lover." Huh? I don't think it's fair to blame Joe. Both of these ARE excellent amps. You don't mention how much of your cost was paid for them initially and how much you spent on tech fees but it sounds like you either overpaid initially or you need to find a better tech. Of course a better solution is to learn to work on these yourself. I have several VM and Sherwood amps, which I also started collecting after reading Joe Rosen's comments about them. All the VM amps, and almost all the Sherwoods, worked pretty well after simply powering them up slowly. If the 1448 was NOS when you got it, why did you feel the need to spend so much on it? I can't imagine what it would need other than fresh electrolytic caps if the originals could not be reformed.
