the setting of the gain control is not a linear indicator of output power. Most preamps have enough gain to significantly overdrive the amplifier, especially with high output sources like a CDP. As an aside, I don't use preamps at all for that very reason. Full gain on your receiver occurs anywhere from 10:00 to 2:00 on the control. You may be fully driving your amp at your current setting.As sanman indicated, more power can translate to more headroom, better dynamics, and the avoidance of clipping or near clipping artifacts. All of which can be beneficial.
