I have a lot of the modern stuff thought to be deep value
1. Pr of Insignias I got on sale for $35 at BB (gasp! these have gone to 79.99 reg price and $63 on sale.) Haven't invested in either Dennis murphy upgrade kit or the GR-Research upgrade kit, which go in fairly different directions, yet, but quite frankly I'm not critical of how they sound out-of-the box.
2. Toshiba 3950 DVD unmodded $59
3. Cyberhome DVD/CD $35
4. Sonic Impact $29 tho I find the power supply a hassle.
5. Pr of BR-1s tho IMHO the unmodded Insignias are the better speaker
They weren't around when I bought the BR-1s
plus my own Deep value DIY project speakers.I confess to looking longingly at the $39 5.1 setup at Kmart with power, 5 little speakers and mini-sub today. I have no idea what I would use it for right now. I'm waiting for little video projectors to sell for about $200. Then I will build a portable front projection system using the 4 ft fixed-frame screen I built with the $39 sound system.
