Actually it would not be fibreboard but particle board. Particle board was not as dense or strong as plywood or pure wood for cabinets so cabinets for most speakers except the cheapy stuff was either plywood or a combination of all wood and plywood. Not sure when mdf came about but do remember that it seemed almost overnight it seemed to replace plywood in almost every box either by way of intorducing a mod to a model uch as an "a" version, a new model or simply a running production change.
