Washington FM changes (again)

69.72.27.144

Washington, DC, broadcast radio is changing again today. Bonneville-owned commercial station WGMS (104.1 MHz), which for 58 years has been synonymous with classical music in the DC area, had been up for sale to the Redskins owner for use as an all-sports outlet. However, 104.1 switched format from classical music to "George 104" rock this afternoon. The old WGMS programming last year switched from the original 103.5 xmtr to a weaker one on 104.1.

Two years ago WETA-FM (90.1) switched format from classical music to talk. Today they had a press release posted on their website saying they were reverting to 24-hr classical starting 8 p.m. tonight. The also said that (as has been rumored) WGMS will donate their CD library to WETA-FM.

An FCC petition has been filed to transfer the WGMS call sign to WETA-FM's repeater xmtr in Hagerstown, Md.

As of 4:00 p.m. both stations' websites were down.
