Repairing some friends' radio. Do I need this part?

Which tuner to get and getting the most from it. Thank God, for the radio!

They 1950's Blaupunkt short wave radio. I'm setting them up with a complete set of replacement tubes. I have everything except an EA8C 80. I can't find any references to it and am not even sure its a tube.
Is this something they should have a spare of or is this something that never needs to be changed? I'm sure someone here knows about this. :~->
