My Kenwood KT-990D seems pretty good right out of the box.

I will eventually open it up and try to determine if mods could help the sound or anything but it sounds really good already not to mention it has quite a few high end weak signal helping features. I got mine for much less than a couple hundred off ebay. Seems like a pretty good deal to me now in hindsite.
