and if it does look like a fish-bone/downed pine tree, and it is for FM only, get an upgrade, soon.A narrow pattern helps. And, if it's FM only you can also get a heap more gain / 'quiet' signal, etc.
so ..... where is / are yr FM station/s, in distance, and on the compass, from you?
Vital info this, look them up on the web.
Nth America has at least one site with mapped stations and power data.
Go higher,? elsewhere suggested, definitely.
how tall are the trees? If they are pines, have you got a friend or know of, who has spikes and is happy to climb one??? seriously and bore a hole/s in the right side for you to mount a directional antenna.
could you move the van, itself, uphill? In the light of how far away and in which direction is the FM station?
For now, and before you return anything.
try the experiment, run the antenna's coax direct into the recvr, if things get even a bit better, you know to rewire the trailer-van* / add to the downlead?
*Use the existing cable to pull the new cable through!? try it.
What else.
Wind? Stability? If you go high can you take it down, if you're not there all the time? Guys with a centre turnbuckle and hooks into angle-iron pegs?
Do report back.
listening, out.
