The mighty XPRS outta Baja / Tiajuana Mexico-With a birthname of Bob Smith, one needs an angle to splash showbiz. Coupled with an inate marketing and business sense (strongly carried on by his estate), the way to smother the local LA AM radio market, is to do an American show and use a Mexican station. NO FCC rules regarding 50kW max xmitter power!
IIRC, XPRS was 100kW or a whole lot more. I *do know they reached the Bay Area at night, with occasional fade in and out.
A *real* Disc Jockey with a mic, TT's and records. A true entertainer with a strong preference for R&B, blues, and most anything non-mainstream. The call-ins were classic; preferring girls:
"Do you love the Wolf, baby?"
(giggle) "Yeah"
"Can I squeeze your peaches?"
(Aaaawwoooooo wolf howl)
Muddy Waters cut starts...A huge impact on this young kid, and the tubed radios didn't hurt either.
