Newbie needs antenna advice

The stations I am interested in are in the vicinity of Boston, MA (e.g. WGBH) and are about 50 miles to the south of me. I live about half way up a hill, but the line of sight is blocked because the house is surrounded by very tall trees. My "boom box" in the garage has some trouble receiving these stations with its 3' antenna, same for the receiver in my living room with a simple wire dipole. So I'm skeptical that a better dipole will work. I'm thinking of using an inexpensive Yagi, mounted in my attic or on my roof. Something like this:

Some questions:

First, is an antenna like this overkill for the distances I'm trying to receive?

Second, would I need a rotator, considering that the more distant stations I would listen to are within about 10-15 degrees of eachother in azimuth and any others I would want to receive are much closer?

Thanks,
Dave
