I would do nothing. I just had my Radio Shack antenna down in order to do Brian's modifications. It has been up in stock form for well over five years and it still looked fine. What you need to watch is the matching transformer and the boot. The boot dries out and cracks with time. I also use silicon sealer between the boot and the transformer and around the cable where it exits the boot.
