Brent in TO,A good question. I have a McIntosh MX110 and I've always heard the tuner is supposed to be more or less an MR-67, but I've never heard a similar relationship wi the MX112. I suppose the obvious choice would have to be the contemporary solid state tuner- the MR-73, but at a glance, the tuner section of the MX112 and the MR-73 have different specifications and controls.
If the MX112 has an MR73 in it- you're lucky. I think the nearby MR-74 (and the MR-77) are the two best sounding solid state McIntosh tuners- you may keep your MR-78's !
I'm no the expert, but is it possible the tuner section for the MX112- the first McIntosh ss tuner/preamp was not closely related to a specific McIntosh tuner?
BTW, I used my MX110 as the tuner in the main tube system for about 15 years- marvelous tuner, listenable for hours and hours. Now, I have a Revox B-160 and an MR-77- practical solid state, but I'm not sure I'm actually happier sonically- I can leave the ss ones on 24 hours without worrying about tubes though.
Cheers,
Bambi B
