I don't believe you're supposed to use anything more than canned compressed air on the variable capacitor fins.
One thing I've always meant to do (read: another lazy ass here) is to clean the variable capacitor bearings, and repack them with conductive silver grease. I believe the late, great Bill Thomas gave details on this procedure on the Dynaco Doctor forum.
