But I dreamt of the answer last night. It is quite interesting IMO.
California is experiencing an EPIC drought. The hillside I am pointing the antenna at (so the antenna NOW is probably pointing straight at the majority of the transmitting antennas) is now devoid of moisture and is allowing the radio waves to propagate.
At least now I do know the best direction and I will climb a tree in the future to see if I can get high enough to maintain the good reception. I don't want to erect a gigantic mast in order to achieve a good height, as I have neighbors who will probably object to it.
