The 78 was designed to go against the 10b while the 77 was slotted to go against the 20 tuner.
The 20b back then was the better sounding of the pair as the extra RIMO filter stage limited the audio quality in exchange for the pulling power. Marantz's approach rather than with the i.f. Did different tuners know the 20 and 20b. The sonic difference between the 20 and 20b is mush less as a result.
The exchange of course was the 20b was more expensive and complex because of the built in scope.
With both in comparable state will yield about what your impression is as the 20b is a wider band tuner.
