If tube type, I would use a military Collins R-390A. 80 lbs of brute force receiver. Use a 12" full range speaker without the whizzer cone. It will amplify the small 1 watt audio out from the Collins R-390A and no whizzer cone reduces static some what for easier listening.
Being an engineer type, I think this is getting out of hand- just scrap the idea of that AM station!
