OK sounds like its an AM/FM unit. That antenna is likely for FM and doesn't affect AM. I also assume you want to improve FM reception. Is there two screws where the one "clamped" on the power cord is? If so you can do lots of things, dipole, rabbit ears,little amplified thing. It won't likely help AM. It probably has a ferrite bar antenna or a circular wire pattern on the inside of the back cover of the unit. Repositioning the radio will change the AM reception. Enjoy! I love old tube radios with wood cabinets with AM/Shortwave from the 30's and 40's.
