Hi, c3conv2:
I have owned a lot of tube and also solid-statetuners and still have many in the house. Some of the best ones ever made, in fact.
The humble FM-3 with appropriate upgrades, may turn out to be very nice sounding, less expensive than perhaps a Fisher FM-100-B (one of my personal favorite tube tuners) but the truth is that in stock form, I would be very surprised that an FM-3 could really compete when put up against a properly functioning Sansui TU-37. Just on specifications alone, the Sansui would theoretically have better perfomrance as far as stereo decoding capabilities and quieting are concerned. And there is also the comparison for overall noise and distortion levels, not to mention selectivity and sensitivity.
Go ahead and upgrade the FM-3 (there are unbelievable mods out there to try out) and then compare the two.
If your Dyna tuner was made from a kit, watch out for poor soldering connections, possible problems with the somewhat fragile circuit boards and old traces, and then you have the tunes to test, replace, etc. A project like that would keep you busy for quite a while, but might be worth it!
Those of us on this forum would be interested to hear your comments afterward.
Sadly enough, in my area anyway, there is not much being broadcast which allows you to compare the merits of some of these older tuners, but if you have a good outdoor rotating antenna, the directional aspect of the antenna can work wonders for ANY tuner, by pulling in broadcasts which make it all wonderful! Beam me in, Scotty!
Good luck!
