Hi ,
No idea about the commercial testers you mention , the things sound rather crude to me . To date I have used Avo (CT160) and Taylor (45A and B) testers which can be preset for various bias and anode voltage settings . The Taylor 45B is just a mutual conductance tseter although the Taylor 45C and Avo CT160 have the facility to measure anode current which is especially useful for testing power valves and rectifiers . By leakage I mean inter-electrode shorts . There can be cold shorts (static testing) or hot shorts which manifest once HT applied and the valve under test warms up , especially useful for testing h-k insulation on the 5965 , which although I know from testing hundreds of the things and similar double triodes , is fairly rare but does occurr . Gassiness can often be spotted by a continually rising anode current . Glad to hear you're having fun testing your stock , I also like the odd theraputic evening of valve testing , but it's horrible when rare valves such as pinched waist E88CC and metal base EL34 etc end up in the trashcan .cheers
