Re: Torroids as audio

68.83.24.164

Nice work Paul.
I to am in the beginnings of using power toroids for audio. USing 35 VA Hammonds I'm finding in a SE para-feed type arangement the bandwidth goes to well over 100k.

I ordered units with 4 117v windings but was dissipointed to find, at least, the secondaries to be poorly bifiller wound making them poor phase splitters but still to 20khz with nasty peaking just above.THis is SE driven to P-P. I hope to try them as P-P to P-P with battery biased 6S45s soon.

If you look at www.toroid.com they sell kits that you could get some winding ideas from. They make a long, thin, flat wire keeper (for lack of a better word) that the winder prewinds the wire onto then it threads through the hole quite nice and easily. Looks like it would only take a few minutes while listening to ones favorite recordings to make a nice winding. THis keeper could be easily made from plywood or plastic.

What preamp are you using? At least with the 5:1 it should be an easy drive, unlike the Sowter 8920 that needs a heartier preamp.

The amp topology that your working with is similar to the Amity and to the one I've been working with for a year or so. Judgeing from the sound I'm getting this is a great way to get some extra power (if needed) and nice sound and stay away from high B+ as required by higher powered SETs.

Thanks for the report.
