Preamp advice needed

Okay, I have a Roberts tube reel-to-reel stereo recorder and player. I stripped out the amp with the intent of making a guitar pre-amp/overdrive out of it. It has pre-out jacks. I got this crazy idea that since it didn't have enough gain to suit me, being it only uses two 12AT7's, one per channel, that I could plug guitar into mic#1, left channel, connect left pre out to Mic.#2 right channel, then run pre-out right into guitar amp and get tons of gain as well as using both channels. Now this works just great, as long as I don't turn channel one up too much, but my question is this, am I hurting the amp? Is this gonna fry my tubes in a hurry? Should I maybe put a resister between pre-out and mic. in? Any advice much appreciated as I'm new at tube circuitry.
