A valve diode typically has way lower ratings for peak current than a 1N4007. Unless the person who suggested a higher current rated diode is referring to a significantly different application, then either you misinterpreted the 'better choice' or they overplayed the advise, as there isn't any practical benefit to make it a 'better choice' unless you only have a higher current rated diode to hand.
