It will be only marginally useful if it's not metered. A capacitor that doesn't reform properly can damage other components even the voltage is increased gradually. There's just no way to know what's happening without an ammeter. Unfortunately, metered variacs are pretty expensive, even the Chinese junk. I ended up building my own a few years ago.
