RE: What problem do you need the regulator to solve?

Less is more. Any combination of regulation you want to use will work, but simpler is almost always better. Current regulators / shunts seem to subjectively sound better than voltage regulation. If you are just doing a preamp, the K&K will be fine without voltage regulation prior. I personally would not have two separate electronic filters in series.

Better, a choke input filter (critical choke), done right, will sound better (listening to music) than any of the electronic filters. This is the original current reg. However they are bigger and more expensive to do right.
