RE: 7025 DC 2A3...

And yet, the very place you need gain and sensitivity, much more than any driver stage in any amp, is in a phono stage.

And all the input stage has to drive is a "fairly benign" filter network with a "relatively constant impedance" which if designed appropriately is well within 2-3x the drive Z of the stage.

Simples.

And yet, the 12AX7 struggles and when a valve of similar mu but lower Z is substituted, things get a whole lot better. Sub in an EC8020, EC81010, D3a, E810F, 6C45, 6GK5 and so on, things get much better.

So why don't you see these things in regular commercial gear? Coz they're not off the shelf parts. They drive stuff better, have the same gain as the available 12AX7 but just plainly do it better and so not get weighed down by the 12AX7 limitations; they get out of the way more.

This is something I have found and so have many others. This is the sort of thing I have been studying, in my own way, for over a decade.

I struggle with the claims you make for the 12AX7. There are plainly far better devices out there but only if you don't have to make commercial gera. Ooh look, this is not a commercial gear site. Your claims for the 12AX7 just doesn't stack up against many other people's experiences and so your explanations for why it is good are even further away from any credible explanations as to why it could be good.

The purveyors of fables and magic have no place in this age. There are plain truths that stack up against your claims.

Now if you want to say, I like the sound of the 12AX7 as a limited swing driver, great. Your opinion, your choice. You nail your prejudices to themast and we can all see what they are and the reason for them. Fair enough. don't agree but that's OK.

But instead you're creating a nonsense explanation for something that plainly doesn't exist. Fables and magic are not equally valid to rational thought and valid experiences. Beliefs are not the equal of reasoned explanations.

IMHO, the 12AX7 is a poor device and there are far better choices. Now that subject alone would be a good point for discussion.

cheers,

Stephen
