I tried big ones, up to 55 pound chokes, low DCR in the early 1980s, when Fair Radio had them surplus priced from transmitters. They sounded "odd" to me, something was wrong. When you get much above two pounds in a choke, you have energy storage problems.

Also, open frame chokes seem to sound better, quite a bit better than end-bell type chokes. End bells goof them up.

All the chokes I recommend in a modern supply are under two pounds, have LOW energy storage "artifacts", and easily fit below the chassis deck, where they can be optimally positioned.
