That sounds like another good use for a triode/pentode.I haven't compared many preamps. I don't think this one is particularly mellow or harsh. There is more trebel and bass, and I think they balance each other well.
I thought about using a second pair of pentodes to load the output stage of this amp. Sounds like a good design.
