You've already tested the HV supply separately from the amplifier. You know that when you bring up the AC voltage, the transformer/bridge draw very little current. If you don't want to eliminate the variac, I suggest that you temporarily replace the 6AU4s with silicon. Most important, you need a separate supply to apply full filament voltage to the 845s at all times. They should be lit well before application of B+, and to ensure longest possible life, should remain lit until after B+ is removed.
