Back in the '70s, when Vishay made only ultra-precision resistors and had not yet bought other component vendors, they issued an interesting application note. They used a Sound Technology THD meter to measure linearity of their resistors, compared with other types, and got spectacularly low distortion. They found this to be a good QA method, specifically to look for bad lead welds that increased the distortion dramatically. This question of interface between lead wires and resistor element can be critical to resistor linearity.
