Just a quick question.
My understand is that with the inputs shorted (ie. no preamp or source) you have hiss that is volume dependent.
So, if you unplug the amp under these conditions, is the hiss still there? Listen while you are running on hot tubes and just the stored energy in the power supply. If the hiss is still there it's most likely not the high voltage or rectifiers.

Just something to try.

...and what happens if you short the grid of the input tube at the tube?
